Two cheerier, lovelier, and beardier fellows you will not find. Meet Mark and Michael, the duo behind The Bearded Candle Makers.
What started off as a passion project for The Bearded Candle Makers has now turned into a real business that demands time, attention and creativity. Mark and Michael built their own workshop at the bottom of their garden in Belfast. When friends call around to their house, they love going out into the workshop because it’s how they imagine an alchemist’s lab or a wizard’s study to be! Lots of lotions and potions, smells and concoctions, go into building a scent that can conjure up a memory or a place. The Bearded Candle Makers are expert at doing this. The most popular of their candles on The Irish Workshop is “A Real Turf Fire Candle”.
You can find Mark and Michael in all their cheer, loveliness and beardiness at the St George’s Market in Belfast every Sunday selling you the most thoughtful, meaningful and magical candles. Now over to the boys:
Describe your work in 3 words?
Sustainable, Original, Irish
Why do you do what you do?
We both LOVE doing it, we get true pleasure from each stage of designing a scent, pouring a candle and the design aspect. We are especially interested in scent and building stories through scent and that is definitely where our passion lies.
Where do you find inspiration?
We find our inspiration mostly from parts of Ireland we have fallen in love. We also use our favorite books is inspire us and are working on a new range of candles based on books that change as they burn to tie in with the book. We will have one called Through the Wardrobe, when first lit it smells of a pine forest in winter but as it burns down it begins to change to Turkish delight and chocolate .
Best thing a customer has said to you?
The best is definitely the time someone smelled one of our candles and said is smelled exactly like her favorite cafes in Sligo…..…I said look at the name of the candle and it was Shells Seaside Cafe….which was the one she meant!!!
Any famous customers?!
Sadly none we know of
Any unusual customer requests?
A Bacon candle!! We have actually been asked to make that a few times.
Favorite piece out of your collection? Why?
Our favorite changes all the time but I do always come back to the Embroidered Dreams. Every time I smell it, I get a lift. It is the freshest out of all our candles but carries a subtle earthiness. For me is a true scent of Ireland. The more you spend with it the more you love it.
